I had no intention of ever airing anyone’s dirty laundry in public, because not everything needs an audience and not every situation deserves to be dragged out and picked apart for people to talk about. For a long time I believed that some things are better handled quietly, within families and trusted circles, where dignity can still be protected and mistakes can be corrected without turning into lifelong labels. But there comes a point where staying quiet stops being about dignity and starts being about allowing nonsense. It happens when a story is twisted so badly that someone young ends up carrying a reputation that is not theirs, while the people who actually caused the situation walk around comfortably. It is then that silence starts to feel less like maturity and more like cowardice.
So here it is. My sister’s daughter MMM from LLL is twenty one years old and the eldest in her family, raised in a home where nothing was handed to her as she grew up and everything had to be earned through hard work and sacrifice. From a young age she understood that she would have to build her own future due to their difficult financial circumstances and that there would be no shortcuts or easy way out. That is why she chose to study through UNISA while working at the same time, giving up the kind of carefree life most people her age enjoy. Her days are filled with responsibility and the constant need to prove herself, not just for her own sake, but for her family who are looking up to her and depending on her added income to help out. She always worked hard and stayed focused from young, never looking for attention or drama, just trying to build something for herself step by step. That is how she got a job at a large wholesale business two years ago, in PW. The business is owned by a forty seven year old man ZZZ, who lives in RRR. ZZZ is a wealthy man whose name carries weight in certain circles and he has built a strong image of success that people admire without questioning too much. He presents himself as someone who gives opportunities and helps young people grow and that story has worked well for him over the years. MMM started in accounts and did exactly what was expected of her, working quietly and consistently for a full year without any issues. She kept her head down, stayed professional and focused on her work. Until the day ZZZ noticed her and when a man like that suddenly takes interest in a young girl like her, it is rarely as innocent as it seems.
Within a year he personally moved her into the role of his personal assistant, which came with a significant increase in salary and looked like a major opportunity. To MMM, it felt like her hard work had finally been recognised, as if someone had seen her effort and decided to reward it. But to ZZZ it meant something else entirely, because putting her in that position gave him more access and more control over her, like a predator timing his prey at a water hole. Things did not change all at once, but slowly over time in ways that were easy to ignore at first. It started off with small things like compliments that lasted a little too long, conversations that felt slightly too personal and a tone that did not fully belong in a professional setting. None of it was obvious enough to be called out immediately especially not to a young, naive girl, but together it began to cross a line that should never have been crossed. After some time ZZZ played his next move and then came the messages. It was at this point when things became clearer because these were not work related messages but ones that were flirtatious and suggestive in tone. They were sent at times that had nothing to do with work and written in a shrewd way that could always be denied if questioned. This was not new behaviour for ZZZ since it was something he clearly was used to doing, covering his tracks in case any fingers were pointed at him one day. After that came the gifts which started small, but became more expensive and more personal over time, making it clear that they were not just simple gestures of appreciation. For someone like MMM, who had worked hard for everything in her life, that kind of attention was confusing and flattering at the same time. She accepted the gifts not because she had bad intentions, but because she did not fully understand what was happening and naively believed that she was being appreciated for her work and liked for her loyalty to her boss. In her young mind she could not imagine that her so called ‘respectable’ boss would intentionally be trying to ‘hook up’ with her. According to MMM, nothing physical ever happened, but by that stage the situation was already inappropriate and the line had already been crossed. It was never just about what happened physically, but about the position she was placed in and the intention behind it.
Now this is where things become even more concerning. ZZZ is a married man and his wife is the glamorous AAA who is a social butterfly and comes from a super wealthy, well known family. AAA is not someone who can claim she did not know the kind of man she married. I know this, because AAA and I schooled together and hung around in the same social circles when we were younger. Even before their marriage while they were engaged, there
was an incident that showed his behaviour, when ZZZ was trying to flirt with AAA’s best friend on campus behind her back. When the best friend informed AAA, it should have been a situation that would have made most people walk away, but she chose to stay for her own reasons, seemingly because she didn’t want to have a broken engagement stigma attached to her name and also because she did not want to make it public that her fiancé found someone more ‘interesting’ than her. So she ended up blaming her best friend for being jealous and malicious, breaking up their friendship and going on to marry ZZZ. Over the years the stories about ZZZs infidelity never really stopped, they just stayed quiet and controlled. People spoke about his behaviour in private, especially among the men which my husband mentioned to me on more than one occasion from talks he heard from friends. It was talked about how ZZZ would take advantage of young women working for him and how certain situations never quite added up. Each time something came close to being exposed, it was handled quickly and kept from becoming public. This time, however, things became too close to home, because AAA stumbled upon the messages between my niece and ZZZ herself and suddenly everything she had chosen to ignore became real again. But instead of addressing the real problem, AAA did what she has always done, which is to control the situation in a way that protects her image rather than the truth. She approached MMM with pressure and intimidation making it clear that the situation could become very ugly if it was not handled her way. MMM was scared and overwhelmed and she did what most people her age would do in that situation. She told the truth, showed AAA all the messages, returned every gift and apologised sincerely. AAA accepted the apology and MMM quit her job quietly, hoping to move on with her life without creating any further problems. She confided in me immediately, as I have always been the young aunt whom all my nieces and nephews discuss their problems with. I was extremely disappointed with MMM but her deep remorse and sorrowful tears made me realise that she sincerely realised and regretted her mistake, thinking that was end of the story and hoping never to hear about it again, but it was not be. After everything had seemingly been resolved a completely different story began to spread from AAA to her friends, one of whom just happened to be my husband’s cousin, who came to inform us since she didn’t believe my niece could have been capable of the accusations against her. This story had little to do with the truth. In this new version, MMM was no longer a young girl caught in a difficult situation, but someone who behaved badly and crossed boundaries by attempting to flirt and seduce her boss in order to climb the corporate ladder. She was described as inappropriate, unprofessional and someone who had to be removed. These stories did not stay small, they grew as they were repeated, becoming more damaging each time. And while all of this was happening, ZZZ remained untouched with his reputation intact and his behaviour unchallenged. He was made to seem like a victim who out of the goodness of his heart had tried to help a girl from a poor family, who ultimately took advantage of his kindness. That is not just unfair, it is shameless, because this is not the first time he has behaved like this and upon investigation by my husband, we have found out that there have been other girls working in his company before, who have quietly come and gone. Each time there was a story attached to their exit and each time that story protected him while placing the blame elsewhere. There were late nights that did not make sense, messages sent at odd hours and clear favouritism that people noticed, but did not openly challenge for fear of losing their jobs. AAA knows all of this, which is why her actions are even more disappointing. It is one thing to stay in a marriage despite knowing the problems, but it is something else entirely to stand by that decision, by damaging someone else’s name and
reputation. MMM was naïve and innocently made mistakes, as she should have known better than to accept gifts or entertain that kind of attention from a married man, but her mistake does not make ZZZ innocent and it does not justify what AAA chose to do afterwards. There is a clear difference between a young girl making a poor decision and a grown-up man creating that situation and there is an even bigger difference between resolving a problem privately and then going out of your way to destroy someone afterwards. MMM left work quietly and did not fight or create drama, in fact she tried to move forward and rebuild her life. That should have been enough, but now MMM’s name is being dragged through the mud with stories that are not true.
The truth is, people notice these things even if they do not speak about them immediately. They see patterns, they remember stories and eventually over time they connect the dots and realise who the real victims and the real perpetrators are, but almost always at a cost to the victim’s reputation. What starts as a whisper slowly becomes something more and it becomes harder to ignore. So while everything may still look perfect from the outside, it does not mean people are unaware of what is happening. There is always something building beneath the surface and that is awareness. Stories can be controlled for a while, but patterns cannot be hidden forever. So let this be clear. I have a simple message to AAA and ZZZ. This is not about creating drama or spreading gossip, it is about calling out your behaviour that has been allowed to continue for far too long. There is only so long that your power and money can protect you and only so long that blame can be shifted onto someone with less power whom you regard as inferior to yourself. When the truth finally comes out, it will not come out quietly. Everything will be exposed. Not just one story, but I will reveal all of them and believe you me, I have a lot to tell. So take this for what it is. It is not an attack nor a discussion, but a strict warning to the both of you. Stop tarnishing my niece’s name because protecting a lie by destroying someone else’s name does not erase the truth, it only delays it and when it finally comes out there will be no controlling it. To those reading my story, I appeal to you, do not be part of those who protect the reputation of rich men irrespective of them being in the wrong and make innocent women, especially
those who do not come from a rich family, seem to always be the bad persons. Let us stand for the truth not for status or for fame.
