A night of singing drumming & dancing as locals celebrate festival of Kavady

The night air was lit up with vibrant and colourful fireworks, with a burst of energetic singing, drumming and dancing as local Hindu temples joined hands in celebrating the Hindu festival of Kavady, with a chariot procession of the Hindu deity, Lord Muruga through the streets of Laudium.

Laudium Sun freelance photographer, Manash Das, captured these scenes at the Kavady festival.

The event this past Saturday (January 24) was organised by local youth music groups, Deva Sena Music Troupe and Dharma Shastha Bhajana Sabah. The youth had worked tirelessly for many weeks and through sleepless nights to pull of an event of this magnitude that united, temples in Laudium through song , dance and drumming in praise of the divine Lord Muruga. The festival takes place during a ten day period in the Tamil month of Thai and culminates with devotees observing prayer on the 10th day, which falls on 1st February this year. “We are grateful for the wonderful collaboration with all temples that volunteered to be a part of this event, as well as to all the Bhajan groups that made this event such a success,”said Priyan Reddhi of the Deva Sena Music Troupe, who volunteer their services regularly at various temples in and around Gauteng. “We are proud to have such a strong collaboration with the Deva Sena music troupe elevating worship to another level” said Prevon Chetty of Dharma Shastha Bhajana Sabha. The two metre tall Muruga was charioteered through specific streets of Laudium with the kind assistance of Laudium Disaster Management, who ensured the route was clear and well protected. Vishanka Kistnasamy told the Laudium Sun, “I wish to thank all who participated and for their kind support making the event a success.” Privani Reddhi told the Laudium Sun, “We would like to thank all temples and their trustees and our sponsors for always being so willing to support ventures held by the youth in Laudium. I definitely think we should host more collaborations in future. Thanks also goes to the Laudium Sun for covering the event.”

The event ended with a bang with a myriad of lights that burst into the night sky with the lighting of fireworks on 13th Avenue.
