Mas’ooda’s beehive brainwave lands her Forbes spotlight

Erasmia’s own Mas’ooda Varachia, now a Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 cover star, has certainly made her community proud, with locals saying her amazing recognition is not just a win for her, but for every girl in the area with big dreams. An Honours graduate in Psychology, Mas’ooda transitioned into the world of technology, where she has made an indelible mark. Now, as the CEO and driving force behind Raven Technologies, an innovative agri-tech initiative, she co-developed and led the rollout of a groundbreaking national beehive program in partnership with the Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA). This project leverages technology to transform rural and peri-urban livelihoods through modern beekeeping, job creation, and sustainable agricultural practices.
This data-driven approach is made possible through innovation in IoT (Internet of Things), using a sensor-based system that tracks hive health, GPS location, humidity, temperature, and productivity in real time. This tech-enabled solution bridges traditional agriculture with modern systems thinking, positioning small-scale beekeepers as part of the digital economy.

This project leverages technology to transform rural and peri-urban livelihoods through modern beekeeping, job creation, and sustainable agricultural practices.
To date, the program has successfully distributed over 7,000 beehives across every province in the country and empowered over 700 new beekeepers, many of whom are unemployed youth and women. Each beneficiary not only receives physical hives but also access to a unique support ecosystem—including technical training, mentorship, and a digital platform that monitors hive performance remotely. Mas’ooda’s success is not only measured by the numbers, but by the lives transformed. In rural communities where opportunities were once scarce, beekeeping has become a viable path to financial sustainability, environmental stewardship, and dignity.
