A sewage leak at the Laudium Stadium which has been going on for months now, has resulted in residents living in the area complaining about the foul stench and calling on the Council to rectify the unhealthy conditions in the area, due to the sewage leak.

The sewage water which has been running from the stadium into 19th Ave, has resulted in many residents complaining to the Laudium Sun about the poor service from the Council saying that the Council is dragging its feet to sort out the problem, despite numerous calls to the council complaining about the leak. A number of residents, mainly those residing on Marble Street and 19th Ave, say that they have been complaining to the Council for months about the water leakage, asking them to repair it but the Council has just ignored their appeals. 45-year-old Imran Patel from Marble Street told the Laudium Sun, “We have a problem of scarcity of water in Laudium and when see the water that is being wasted on the street we feel frustrated because for weeks we have been struggling with water shortage. We have been complaining about this water leakage for months to the Council but nothing is being done to fix the problem. When we see water from the sewage of the stadium running onto the street, we just feel sad because of the wastage. Many times, we as residents don’t have water to cook with or bath in, yet there is water being wasted by all these blocked drains and leaking water pipes all over Laudium. The Council has to do something to repair this water leak because they are wasting taxpayers money. If this water leak was inside someone’s yard wasting water, the Council was going to be quick to bill that person with tariffs. The caretaker at the stadium is doing nothing to eradicate this problem. We are sick and tired
of seeing water flowing on the street. The water which is flowing if it was watering a garden of vegetable site then at least it was going to be good. We need the Council to resolve this matter quickly.”

A Council worker at the stadium, Thabo Mamemola said the water leakage from a sewage at the stadium has been leaking for the past two years. “We have reported this matter to our supervisors. Although workers from the council came and repaired the water leakage, but it started blocking the next day. I don’t know what causes this blockage each time but I think it is time that the repair team from the council should dig up the area to see what exactly is the problem.”

Colleen Singh from Bethesda Revival Church said they cook food every Wednesday for destitute people and there was no water in Laudium this week. When we see water from the stadium flowing onto the street because of a water leak we get frustrated and angry. We are urging the Council to repair this water leakage quickly.

Peter Mashobane, the caretaker at the Laudium Stadium, said he has reported the leakage many times to the Council and the matter was not in his hands to resolve.
