Political candidates from across the political spectrum gathered at Bethesda Revival Church in Laudium for a special occasion of prayer, blessing and fellowship, this past weekend.
Representatives from different political parties, cultures and backgrounds were invited to come together under one roof.
The purpose, however, was not to campaign or debate. It was about affirmation, shared commitment and service to the people of Ward 61. Hosted by Pastor Kevin Naicker, the gathering created an opportunity for candidates to step away from political competition and reflect on the responsibility that comes with seeking public office. The candidates were prayed for, blessed and encouraged as they prepare to serve their communities. Regardless of political affiliation, the fundamental responsibility of anyone who seeks to govern is to serve the people, particularly those who are vulnerable and in need. A central scripture for the occasion was Proverbs 31:8-9: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.” The message was clear: no matter who takes office, the poor and needy must be defended and the people must win. The occasion demonstrated that unity does not require uniformity. Political differences can remain, while people still meet one another with dignity, respect and goodwill.

Candidates shared fellowship and stood together in a spirit of peace rather than confrontation. The significance of the moment lay not in political agreement, but in recognising a common responsibility to the community. As the municipal election approaches, the gathering served as a timely reminder that behind every ballot is a person and behind every political constituency is a community with real hopes and real challenges. The challenge now is to carry that spirit beyond the gathering, to continue listening to residents and to place service, dignity, peace and the well-being of the community at the heart of leadership. Different parties. Different backgrounds. One community. One purpose. It’s all about the people.
