Challenging hot & humid conditions do not dampen spirits at annual Golf Charity Challenge

A nation-wide field of 72 players participated in the 27th annual golf tournament, recently hosted by the Laudium Social Golf Club(LSGC).

The ELS Club –Copperleaf, a challenging inland parklands links style course, was once again the venue for this year`s event. The objective of the LSGC is to promote golf and to raise funds for the local community.

Shehzaad Noormohamed of the LSCG told the Laudium Sun, ”We are especially proud of the younger group of the LSGC members taking such a key role in hosting this year’s tournament organising the players, food, prizes, trophies, caddies, and sponsorships. We hope that the youth continue with this trend of helping the less fortunate in our community. Even to make a difference to one life, is real success. Revenue is collected from a combination of golfer`s entrance fees, business sponsorships, and proceeds of an auction.”

Conditions were hot and humid for golf with the course in a challenging condition. All golfers teed off at 7.15am in a short gun start. Competition was fierce and it was indeed veteran player Moosa Jassat who took the crown as this year’s champion golfer of the year. 2nd in the A division was Abdul Malik Ebrahim and third place was awarded to Mohamed Janoo.

The ‘B’ division (handicaps over 13), was won by Yahya Khan. Runners up were Farhad Ghanee and Zaffar Katkodia.

Prizes were awarded for closest to the pin on all of the four par 3 holes- Abdul Malik Ebrahim, Ozayr Osman, Raeez Jassat and Aziz Cassim were the victors in this category. The coveted prize for the longest drive was deservedly awarded to Mikael Carrim – he muscled a massive drive of 296 metres down the eighteenth fairway. The prize for the best gross was awarded to Abdul Malik Ebrahim who shot an unbelievable gross score of 68. Shehzaad added, ”The heart of the tournament belongs to the long list of sponsors. Their generosity makes it possible for the charities to meet some of their financial needs. It was heartwarming to see so many businesses and organizations give so openly; their contribution will certainly make a considerable difference to lives of many of the less fortunate. Sponsors’ names were displayed on the course and will be acknowledged in the Laudium Sun soon. The Laudium Social Golf Club is a voluntary organisation and has approximately 40 members. It operates on a team basis and bears all the costs of the tournament.
