A local family is living in fear after falling victim to what appears to be a petty crime, but one they believe may have a more sinister motivation.
The incident did not involve the usual theft of a light fitting, garden tap, or even a dustbin. Instead, it involved the burning of a dustbin. The Pillay family, who live in the gated area of Jewel Street in Laudium, were left in shock after waking up on Monday morning (March 9) to find that one of their two municipal-issued dustbins—placed outside the previous night for collection—had been burnt. The council waste truck had been expected to collect the rubbish early that morning.
Jewel Street resident Kyla Pillay told the Laudium Sun, “When I woke up in the morning and went outside to check if our two bins had been emptied by the council waste collection truck, I was shocked to see that one of our bins had been burnt. The smoke from the burning plastic even left our outside wall black. I found it very strange because I have never come across anything like this before. I could not believe that such strange things can happen, not just anywhere but here in Laudium. It is a place where we live our lives, try to work hard, and take care of our families, yet incidents like this make me realize that danger can appear even in the most ordinary moments.”
It’s Not Just About a Dustbin
Kyla continued, “The sight of the dustbin, charred and destroyed, made me feel uneasy, afraid, and unsettled all at once. Something so ordinary, something we barely think about every day, suddenly became the centre of fear and concern. I could not stop thinking about why this happened and who would want to do something so strange. Later, I realized that some individuals had been standing outside our house the evening before. I strongly suspect that there were two or three people who deliberately set the dustbin on fire. This act was deliberate and it is horrifying to think that people can do such things to someone else’s property without any reason.

“It is not just about a dustbin; it is about the sense of safety in my home and the security of my community. Today it is a dustbin that is burnt—tomorrow what else could it be? Could they come into our house and start a fire? Could they harm someone we love? I cannot stop thinking about how small acts like this could escalate into something far worse if nothing is done to stop it. Even though the incident may seem small to outsiders, it cannot be ignored. If this type of action by criminals goes unnoticed, it could grow into something far more dangerous.”
Harmful Intentions?
Kyla added, “These culprits may start with small acts like burning a dustbin, but their intentions could be more harmful if left unchecked. Every member of the community needs to be aware of what is happening around them. We need to watch, notice suspicious activity, and stand together. If we remain passive or allow these acts to continue, the consequences could become far more serious for everyone living in Laudium.
“One of the major concerns is that there is very little visible policing in our area. Police patrols are rare and when they do appear, it is not enough to make us feel safe. The local private security guards also do not patrol the area properly, which makes it easier for criminals to act without fear. This lack of surveillance leaves residents feeling vulnerable every day.
“We cannot rely entirely on others to protect us if we do not take action ourselves. Our community has to stand together, watch out for each other, and ensure that criminals—whether motivated by malice or substance abuse—do not succeed in creating fear among residents. Some people may think a burned dustbin is trivial, but it is far from it. It is a warning, a signal of what can happen when people take advantage of weak security and an unprepared community.”
Sabina Patel, also a resident of Jewel Street, told the Laudium Sun, “I cannot believe that someone could simply burn a dustbin and destroy council property. It is such a reckless and dangerous act. The individuals responsible must be extremely careless, possibly under the influence of drugs, or simply willing to put others at risk without regard for the consequences.

If the fire had spread, it could have caught onto nearby houses, streetlight poles, or other property, causing serious damage or even endangering lives. Our community depends on safety, trust, and the ability to live freely without constant fear. Incidents like this shake that sense of security and make everyone feel vulnerable in their own homes.”
Another resident, Nafisha Rahman of Jewel Street, emphasized the need for accountability. She told the Laudium Sun, “There must be an investigation to identify who is responsible for this act. People cannot destroy property and walk away without consequences. Accountability is essential not only for justice but also to prevent similar or more serious incidents in the future. Everyone in the community deserves to feel safe. If crimes like this are ignored, it sets a dangerous precedent. We cannot allow individuals to believe they can threaten safety or damage property without repercussions.”
