As crime continues to be a problem in the Erasmia area, many residents are hoping that the closing of the streets in the area via gated control will solve their problem.
This despite some residents still not prepared to dig deep into their pockets to implement the control. In one of the latest incidents of crime in the area a home was attacked by four thugs who managed to drive into the area and drive out again without being noticed by any of the many private security guards and patrollers in the area or even the police patrollers. The armed thugs attacked the home of the Omar family on Theron Street, last Thursday (August 29) at around 9am, allegedly with the help of their domestic worker who has been working for the family for about three years and who has, since the incident, been missing. The thugs who were also carrying firearms and a hammer stole a number of valuables including jewellery, cash and electronics before fleeing in a white Lexus with unknown registration. Speaking to the owner of the house, who gave her name as Kurshid Omar and who was visibly traumatised of the incident. Kurshid told the Laudium Sun, “I was robbed by four male thugs and my domestic worker, Naeema Mussa from Malawi who is 27 years old. She has been working for us for three years. I don’t know why my domestic worker robbed me as I had not harmed her or did anything wrong to her and I treated her so well. This robbery has left me devastated, more so because of the involvement of my domestic worker, Naeema who I enjoyed a good relationship with and she was always good to the whole family and never showed signs of being unhappy. I really do not want to talk much about the robbery itself as it was very traumatic but urge the community to give any information about the whereabouts of Naeema to the Erasmia Police where we opened a case.” A family friend who did not want to be named told the Laudium Sun, “According to what we were told, is that four thugs entered the
Theron Street house with the domestic worker. They tied the aunty with a rope. The domestic worker used a cloth to cover her employer’s mouth during the robbery. The four thugs were armed and one of them was even carrying a hammer. It is believed that the hammer was used to gain entry into the premises. We don’t know what type of firearms were used during the robbery. We heard that the thugs ransacked the whole house and only left after an undisclosed amount of money, jewellery, watches, cellphones and other electronics were stolen from the house. The thugs left in a white Lexus but unfortunately the registration was not noted.” Erasmia CPF Chair Pritesh Bhana was not available for comment.
