Freakier Friday: Releasing in cinemas – August 8

Synopsis:
“Freakier Friday,” a sequel to the beloved 2003 film with a multigenerational twist starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman respectively. The story picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.

Sun Review:
It’s been 20 years since Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan hilariously swapped lives and now, they’re back in Freakier Friday, older, wiser, and once again… in each other’s bodies. This sequel brings back much of the charm that made the original a generational classic. Jamie Lee still owns every scene with her sharp timing and eye rolls, while Lindsay’s return as Anna brings just enough emotion and chaos to remind us why we rooted for her the first time around. But this time, there’s a new twist: Anna’s daughter and future stepdaughter get in on the body-swap madness too. It’s generational, it’s messy and it’s honestly kind of sweet. The film plays with the idea of blended families, ageing, and letting go, while still squeezing in enough gags to keep the kids (and grandparents) entertained. That said, not everything works. The humour doesn’t always land, some moments feel forced and the pacing dips in places where the emotional beats feel stretched a little thin. It tries hard to juggle nostalgia with something new and while it doesn’t always stick the landing, it mostly works.

Sun Verdict:
Freakier Friday won’t replace the original in our hearts, but it’s a warm, funny and occasionally chaotic sequel that reminds us that family, however blended, is always worth the body swap. A fun, feel-good watch for fans of the first film, with just enough new sparkle to make it worth the revisit.
