From cake to copycat… Cllr Patel accused of hijacking the demarcation issue he ignored for months

First he ignored the crisis. Then he admitted he didn’t object. Then he told us “it’s up to the community now.” And now? He’s suddenly claiming he led the fight. Ward Councillor Naeem… a “Copy and Paste” Councilor.
Dear residents of Ward 61…

Patel has come crawling out of the woodwork, not with facts or leadership, but with cake, confusion, and a stolen campaign.

Bribery or a good gesture? Another cake… Cllr Patel now eating cake with the Chairman of the Ward 61 ANC branch, Selvy… with a lot of gifts for partying on the table.

While the Concerned Community Forum (CCF) did the real work attending meetings, analysing the demarcation documents, building awareness, designing re-look forms, and mobilizing residents, Patel showed up on June 25 in Itireleng with cake and snacks, giving a last minute “info session” that looked more like a voter recruitment picnic.

And now? He’s distributing a bogus petition that holds no weight, because he ignored the
correct process from the start. Let’s be clear, the only official, recognized way to object is through the Demarcation Board’s channels and that’s exactly what the CCF is facilitating.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

  1. 30,000+ residents from Mooiplaas are being added to Ward 61 with no resources, no plan, and no support
  2. Rosina Sedibane Voting District is being split, with 655 voters quietly moved to Ward 51 (Atteridgeville).
  3. Gerhardsville, historically part of Ward 61, is being removed without community consultation

THE COUNCILLOR WHO ONLY CARES ABOUT HIS VOTES
When the demarcation draft was released in April, Patel said, “I was only made aware of the draft demarcation document after the closing date for comments.” “I have not submitted any objections… It is now up to the community to object.”

And later admitted,
“There are more chances of me winning with the current ward setup than with the new one.”

So this was never about protecting our ward, it was about protecting his seat. Now he’s copying the work of others and claiming victory while spreading confusion. It’s dishonest, desperate, and dangerous.

WHY THIS MATTERS
This isn’t about excluding anyone, it’s about saving Ward 61 from collapse. With zero infrastructure expansion, dumping another 30,000 residents into our already overburdened system will break clinics, schools, electricity, water, and policing services. This is about fair governance, proper planning, and protecting everyone’s dignity not selling out communities to secure votes.

CCF didn’t wait for the storm we showed up with solutions. While the Councillor was silent, we were organising. While he was handing out cake, we were handing out facts. While he fakes leadership, we’re fighting for real change.

Zaakira Bhika of the CCF has appealed to residents of Ward 61 to object to the proposed new demarcation by latest Monday (June 30).
Lushika Mooloo, who spearheads the CCF, said the community should not be fooled by Cllr Patel, who has copied the work she has done concerning the demarcation.
