This Sunday (August 9), South Africa will mark National Women’s Day, with the public holiday being observed on Monday (August 10). The 2026 commemoration is especially significant as it marks 70 years since the historic women’s march of August 9, 1956, when more than 20,000 women of all races and backgrounds peacefully marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, against the unjust ‘pass laws’ of the then apartheid government. Their bravery became a powerful symbol of unity and resilience, giving South Africa the well-known words, ‘Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo, meaning ‘You strike a woman, you strike a rock.’ Seventy years later, women have made tremendous progress in education, business, healthcare, politics and sports, amongst others. Yet, many women still face discrimination, unemployment and even harassment and violence, often behind the closed doors of their very own homes. Women’s Day should thus not be reduced to flowers and cheerful messages only. It also means recognizing and respecting the women in our own homes and communities who serve, often quietly, without seeking praise. Let us remember that women are the rock on which our homes and communities stand. The Laudium Sun joins the above pictured Amity International School (Erasmia) teachers, in saluting the courage, sacrifice and strength of all women who continue to build stronger homes, businesses and communities and who make a difference each day.
