Laudium Primary Celebrates Africa Day with Culture, Colour and Consciousness

  • by

Laudium Primary School came alive with song, dance, and cultural pride last Friday (May 23) as it hosted a vibrant Africa Day celebration, that showcased the richness of South Africa and the African continent.

The school’s programme featured traditional dances, musical performances, poetry, and dramatic presentations that reflected the diverse cultures and traditions of Africa. Learners and teachers dressed in colourful African traditional wear, creating a festive and visually striking atmosphere throughout the day. The well-organised event was coordinated by Lettie Maile, a senior educator at the school, whose dedication and vision ensured a meaningful and memorable celebration for all.

One of the highlights of the day was a keynote address by Miss Africa 2024/2025, McCayla Warriker. Ms. Warriker spoke passionately to the learners about the importance of caring for the environment and how young people canplay an active role in building a better, greener future.

In addition to her title, Ms. Warriker is an Impact and Implementation Coordinator, currently assisting Laudium Primary in reviving its school garden. This initiative, run in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, is part of a broader project to engage learners in sustainable agriculture and environmental awareness.

“This day reminds us of where we come from and the role we can play in where we’re going,” said one teacher. “It’s beautiful to see our children proudly embracing their culture while learning how to care for their environment.”

The celebration reflected the school’s ongoing commitment to cultural pride, education, and community development. Through events like these, Laudium Primary continues to foster values of unity, Ubuntu, and responsible citizenship among its learners.
