Laudium skies light up in ‘Festival of Lights’ celebration

Not even the clouds could dim the spirit of Diwali this year, as around 5,000 people gathered at the Laudium Soccer Grounds this past Saturday (October 18) to celebrate the
‘Festival of Lights.’ Organised by the Shree Pretoria Hindu Seva Samaj (SPHSS), the celebration drew attendees from across Pretoria and beyond. Families braved the cold, drizzly weather, coming together under one sky, to honour the festival that symbolized far
more than just lights and fireworks. It honoured the victory of light over darkness, hope over despair and unity over division. The grounds buzzed with energy as attendees from all walks of life and various religious backgrounds gathered together in unity, enjoying the vibrant performances and indulging in traditional treats, with the festivities culminating in a brilliant fireworks display that many in attendance said was ‘simply outstanding.’ A spokesperson for the SPHSS said, “As the final fireworks lit up the night sky over Laudium, the faces of thousands of attendees glowed with awe and joy. In that moment, it wasn’t just
about a festival, it was about belonging. It was about knowing that no matter who we are or where we come from, we all share the same longing for happiness, safety and love.”

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, was not merely a cultural celebration held at the Laudium Soccer Grounds last Saturday (Oct 18); it was and is a symbol of unity, togetherness and the enduring human spirit.

Despite the rain and unpleasant weather, nearly 5,000 people attended—coming from various religious backgrounds, from across Pretoria and even from different provinces. The sight of families, friends and visitors gathering in such large numbers to celebrate, despite the gloomy skies, was a true reflection of the unwavering faith and joy that Diwali brings each year.

It is a timeless symbol of triumph—the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The flickering lamps and glowing diyas remind us that even in the darkest times, a single spark of faith can guide us forward. It tells us that no matter how heavy the clouds, light always finds its way through.

As we light our lamps on Diwali, we do so not only to mark celebration but also in remembrance of those enduring grief, loss, and uncertainty. There are families who face economic hardship, individuals who struggle with personal battles and communities torn apart by war and displacement. May our collective light reach them, offering warmth, strength, and the promise of renewal. Let every flame we light become a prayer for healing, peace, and hope.

We pause to reflect on the suffering of those beyond our borders, especially in places like Palestine and Ukraine, where innocent lives continue to face unimaginable hardship. In these moments, Diwali takes on a deeper meaning—it becomes not only a celebration of joy but also a reminder of our shared humanity.

Let us remember that our lens must always be humanitarian. In a world divided by race, religion, and politics, our responsibility is to rise above division and stand for compassion. We must be the voices of kindness, not judgment; the hands that heal, not the ones that harm. True strength lies not in power or wealth but in the ability to see one another not as strangers, but as brothers and sisters, bound by the same light of creation.

This festival is also a powerful testament to community spirit. Across Gauteng, people gathered not as individuals but as one family—diverse in language, faith, and tradition, yet united in shared values of love, resilience, and hope. The evening at Laudium Soccer Grounds showcased vibrant performances, delicious traditional foods, and a warm sense of fellowship that reflected the beauty of South Africa’s diversity. Diwali teaches us that unity is not just possible—it is essential.

Let us continue to build bridges across our neighborhoods, foster understanding across our cultures, and nurture mutual respect in every interaction. When we celebrate one another’s traditions, we strengthen the fabric of our society. Our diversity is not a challenge—it is our greatest gift. It reminds us that though our paths may differ, our destination is the same: a world filled with light, peace, and harmony.

As the final fireworks lit up the night sky over Laudium, the faces of thousands of attendees glowed with awe and joy. In that moment, it wasn’t just about a festival—it was about belonging. It was about knowing that no matter who we are or where we come from, we all share the same longing for happiness, safety, and love.

May the spirit of Diwali continue to illuminate our hearts, guide our actions, and inspire us to be beacons of hope in the lives of others. May each light we kindle remind us of our power to transform the world around us—with compassion, unity, and unwavering faith in the goodness of humanity.
