LCSA dishes Madiba legacy into every bite…

As we celebrate Mandela Day today (Friday – July 18), filled with reflection and acts of kindness, one organisation in Laudium is already leading by example, not just with words, but with warm meals and kind hearts.

This past Wednesday (July 16), the Laudium Care Services for the Aged (LCSA) hosted a special Mandela Day lunch for their senior citizens. This gesture not only honoured the legacy of Nelson Mandela, but also brought joy, dignity and companionship to some of the most cherished members of our community. The event was a beautiful mix of good food, heartfelt conversation and spirited laughter, as the seniors gathered to enjoy a wonderful lunch. For many, it wasn’t just about the meal, it was about coming together to celebrate the life of the Father of our Nation.

LCSA Chairperson Ahmed Arbee, who addressed the gathering, said that Mandela’s legacy was best honoured by “touching the lives of others with compassion and kindness.”

In honour of Mandela Day (July 18), the Laudium Care Services for the Aged (LCSA) hosted a lunch and a Madiba Day get together for the elders, at the Ballroom venue (Hanifa Centre) on Bengal Str, Laudium, this past Wednesday (July 16).

Chairperson of the LCSA, Ahmed Arbee addressed those in attendance at the event: “Today, as we commemorate Mandela Day, we honor the legacy of a man who sacrificed 27 years of his life in prison to liberate our nation from the shackles of apartheid. Nelson Mandela’s journey is a testament to the power of forgiveness, reconciliation, and humanity.

As Madiba himself said, ‘As I stood before the prison door to my freedom, I realized that if I did not leave my pain, anger, and bitterness behind me, I would still be in prison.’ He endured immense pain and yet chose to forgive his jailers, reconciling our nation and leaving us with a fundamental lesson: holding grudges only makes us bitter, while forgiveness sets us free Madiba’s words continue to resonate with us today: He said ‘The hallmark of a civilized society depends on how you treat the vulnerable.’ In our contemporary world, our youth and senior citizens are often vulnerable, and sadly, women are increasingly victims of gender-based violence. The statistics are alarming, with GBV cases reaching epidemic proportions in South Africa. According to recent reports, one in five women in South Africa experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. This is a stark reminder that we still have much work to do to create a society that values and protects the vulnerable.

As we reflect on Madiba’s legacy, let us remember that we too can leave an indelible footprint in society. We can do so by touching the lives of others, by showing compassion, empathy, and kindness. Let us strive to build a society that is just, equitable, and caring.

In conclusion, Madiba’s legacy teaches us that forgiveness is not weakness, but strength. It liberates our souls and allows us to move forward. Let us honor his legacy by continuing to work towards a better South Africa, where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.”
