Mishka fits into mum’s shoes… leads campaign to donate school shoes to underprivileged

  • by

A young girl from Erasmia, has inspired many residents in the area, after her heart-warming gesture to help young learners, her age and even younger, who are deprived of basic necessities, that so many residents in the area take for granted.

Mishka Ramlal (11), a grade 6 learner from Erasmia Primary School has certainly made many people proud, especially her mum Swastika, who serves as a volunteer on a number of community based organisations, including the LDM. The latest idea to assist others, came into Mishka’s mind when she and her mum were in their car in the Laudium CBD, during the early part of January, when a little boy came to her mum’s car window, asking for any donations as he was excited to be going to school, but didn’t have school shoes.

Swastika told the Laudium Sun, “It broke her heart seeing this small kid, younger than her, having to go out there on his own in this cruel world, to fend for himself, not having the bare necessities in life which most of us take for granted. Mishka celebrated her crown birthday about two weeks back, on the 11th of January and decided that instead of buying a cake or having a party or going out, she would use the very same money to buy school shoes and donate to this boy, whose details we had, and also to other needy children. I took her to Spar and spoke to the manager who was kind enough to give us a total of 35 school shoe vouchers and we took these vouchers and purchased the school shoes, to donate to those in need. Cllr Naeem Patel and Shakeel Bhaktawer were kind enough to assist us with the distribution of 20 pairs of shoes within the community and the other 15 pairs were donated via ‘The Kingdom of Life Centre’ in Atteridgeville, with the assistance of the Laudium Disaster Management team. We’ve managed to collect a further 40 vouchers, which we intend to use to purchase more shoes and donate these by the end of January. I must say that my daughter has made me very proud. Just like me, she has a heart to assist and help others, at this age already.”
