Tribute to Hazrat A lamah Moulana Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi Rahimu lah

“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.” (S2:156) “The death of an Aalim is the death of the aalam (world).” It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi, Rahimullah, a cherished Islamic scholar and community leader from Laudium. Throughout his distinguished career, Mufti Hamidi touched countless lives through his dedication to spreading knowledge and fostering a deeper understanding of Islam. He devoted himself to teaching and guiding others by leading engaging tafseer classes and translating revered texts. Notably, his translation of “Kanzul Imaan”—accompanied by insightful commentary—helped make the profound teachings of Islam accessible to a broader audience. In addition, his work with Dawate Islam International and other organisations saw him translate many classic Islamic works into simple English, greatly enhancing the community’s grasp of its rich heritage.
For a period, he also served on the Pretoria Muslim Trust, where his leadership and commitment contributed significantly to nurturing spiritual growth. His regular Q&A sessions and thought-provoking articles in the Laudium Sun provided clarity and inspiration, addressing contemporary questions of faith with wisdom and compassion.
On a personal note, I had the privilege of interacting with Mufti Saheb on several occasions. I found him to be exceptionally humble and down to earth, always taking the time to address my curiosities and offer thoughtful answers related to Islamic fiqh and jurisprudence. He was truly a lion of Sunnism—steadfast in the defense of the honour of our beloved Prophet (PBUH) a quality that inspired all who knew him. Mufti Hamidi’s life was a testament to unwavering devotion to Allah SWT and the service of humanity. His legacy of compassion, wisdom, and scholarly pursuit will continue to illuminate the hearts and minds of those he mentored.
We pray that Allah SWT grants Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi forgiveness, mercy, and the highest place in Jannah. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire community who were privileged to know him. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory remain a beacon of light, guidance, and inspiration for all.

The great shining star of the world of knowledge, Mufassir-e-Quran Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi (RH), has set

(1) Sayyiduna Hasan Basri (Rahmatullah Alaih) said: “The death of a scholar is such a loss in Islam that nothing can fill this gap as long as the night and day continue to alternate.” (Jami’ Bayan al-‘Ilm wa Fadlih, p. 213, Hadith: 654) Sayyiduna Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah (RH) said: “What greater calamity can there be for the ignorant than the passing of the people of knowledge?” (Sharhus -Sunnah by Al Baghawi, 1/249)
(2) Hazrat Ka’b (Rd) said: “It is incumbent upon you to acquire knowledge before it disappears, for indeed, the passing of scholars is the departure of knowledge. The death of a scholar is like the setting of a star; it is a breach that cannot be filled, a gap that cannot be mended. My parents be sacrificed for the scholars! Without them, there is no goodness among people.” (Akhlaq ul-‘Ulama p. 31)
(3) Hazrat Abu Wa’il narrates that he heard Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (Rd) say: “Do you know how Islam will weaken?” People asked, “How?” He replied, “Just as an animal declines from its prime to weakness, just as a cloth wears out over time, and just as a coin gets worn down from circulation. This will happen when a tribe has two scholars; when one of them passes away, half of the knowledge will be lost, and when the second one dies, all the knowledge will be lost.” (Akhlaq ul-‘Ulama by , p. 33)
This was the great personality who dedicated the prime of his scholarly life to South Africa, playing a significant role in the propagation and promotion of Deen and Sunnah. He was a steadfast torchbearer of the Maslak of A’la Hazrat, a fearless Mujahid of Islam, a bold preacher of Islam, and a resolute debater of truth. Since we stepped into South Africa, we observed and listened to him, and all we found was his deep pain for Islam and Sunnah. He was never inclined towards reconciliation with misguided sects. He always declared truth as truth and falsehood as falsehood.
He presented the Muslim community with a remarkable English translation of A’la Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi’s Kanz-ul Iman, a priceless gift for the Ummah. He also provided the nation with an exceptionally simple and beautiful commentary of the Holy Quran.
Today, on April 2, 2025, this illustrious scholar, Hafiz of the Quran, Qari of the Quran, and Mujahid of Islam Mufti-e-Azam of South Africa , has departed from our midst, leaving our eyes filled with tears. He has gone to enjoy the divine bounties of Allah, the Almighty.
We pray that Allah Almighty, for the sake of His beloved Prophet (PBUH), grants him forgiveness, elevates his status in Jannat-ul Firdous, and bestows immense patience and reward upon his family and loved ones. Mourner, Quasim Umar Misbahi FAÝZAN-E-ZAM ZAM MASJID-JHB.

The passing of Hadhrat Mufti Abdun Nabi is an immense loss to the Ummah. Not only was Marhoom a senior Mufti but Hadhrat was a true servant of the Ummah. Hadhrat Mufti Abdun Nabi shared his knowledge to whomsoever shared time with him. He also displayed a humble and Prophetic quality to the best of his ability. The passing on of Hadhrat Mufti Abdun Nabi (RA) will leave a great vacuum in the field of knowledge. May Allah bless Hadhrat Mufti Saheb with an esteemed place in Jannah.
