Nafsha Fabrics (Falu’s) weaves 60 years of family values

Anver Mahomed (80) continues to go strong, proudly running his fabric store, Nafsha Fabrics (formally Falu’s Fabrics), for the past 60 years in the Laudium CBD.

Laudium has, over the past few decades, gradually evolved into a new landscape, more so after the ANC Government came into power in 1994.

Unfortunately, as crime and grime has plagued the area since then, many residents who were born and brought up in the area have moved out to nearby security estates, resulting in homes and even local state schools being occupied by an influx of ‘foreigners’ coming into the area. Even many of the businesses in the area are now run by foreigners.

However, there is one business that stands out proudly, with the founding owner going strong and still running his store some 60 years later. It is a remarkable milestone and a source of great pride with congrats being in order as the shop, first trading as Falu’s Fabrics on Tangerine Street in the Laudium CBD, turns 60 this month, having opened its doors in 1966 by Anver Mahomed and his wife Farida (now late). Over the years, the store has grown into a well- known and trusted name within the community, recognized for quality fabrics and consistent, reliable service, built on strong family values.

The store continues to embody a personal touch remaining dedicated to meeting the needs of its customers, with care and commitment. Its long-standing presence has allowed the store to form deep connections within the community, making it a go-to destination for a wide range of materials.

Today, the business, now located on 13th Ave, is still managed by Anver (80), whose continued involvement and personal touch reflects his dedication and passion for the trade. His hands-on management ensures that the same high standards of quality, trust, and personalised service remain at the heart of the business, as it was 60 years back. Located within the community it has served for decades, the store continues to uphold its reputation of excellence, combining tradition with a commitment to meeting modern customer needs, while staying true to its roots.

Anver, who was born in Marabastad, Pretoria, told the Laudium Sun, “My late wife, Farida, and I started this material business on the April 1, 1966. My wife was fondly known as Falu, so we decided to name the shop after her, as Falu’s Fabrics. However, after the passing of my beloved wife, it became deeply painful returning to the shop each day, as it was filled with memories of her. Thus, together with my children, we embraced a new chapter by renaming the business, Nafsha Fabrics, a name lovingly derived from my children, Nafiza and Shaheed. Unfortunately, many local residents have moved out of Laudium and business is not as good as it used to be in the old days. However, I am deeply grateful for the continued support of our customers from Laudium, Erasmia and the surrounding areas.”

Anvar added, “I feel blessed to have 2 children; Shaheed and Nafiza and 5 grandchildren; Zaakir Hajee, Zameer Hajee, Muhamad Hajee, Rayyan Mahomed and Zahra Mahomed.”
