Allegations that crime committed by nyaopes is on the increase, continue to make the rounds in the Laudium area, with almost each week, claims surfacing that nyaopes are behind the many crimes taking place in the area.

In one of the recent incidents of crime this past week, a shebeen on Onyx Street was broken into this past weekend and according to the owner, nyaopes were responsible for the crime.

Bobby Pillay of Emerald Street, known as uncle H, told the Laudium Sun of the incident that took place this past weekend, which was discovered on Sunday morning (March 6). “When we closed our business on Saturday night, everything was fine. On Sunday morning my son and I were at home getting ready to go to work. I was still busy with a few things, so my son got ready to leave, to open the business. As he was about to leave, at around 9am, which is the time we normally open the shebeen, one of the neighbours of the shebeen called to say that two suspicious looking nyaope guys had been standing for a long time outside the shebeen. The neighbor said at first he did not think much because he thought maybe these two guys were waiting for the shebeen to open up, but then when he checked on them again, they seemed to be hiding, as if they did not want to be seen. My son then immediately rushed to the shebeen, but when he got there these two guys were gone and when he got to the gate of the shop to open the locks, he was shocked to find the locks laying broken on the floor. When he got inside the shop he found that it had been ransacked, with bottles laying on the floor and much of the liquor stock missing. My son then discovered that our big screen TV together with other valuables was missing. We suspect that it was these two nyaopes who were hanging around there in the morning, who were involved in the thefts. They must have broken into our shop during the night after we closed, and then came back in the morning to steal more things. Crime is terribly high in Laudium and these thieves must have sold the stolen items to someone nearby. That is why they could come back again during the morning.”

Resident, Kevin Pillay from Onyx Street told the Laudium Sun that he heard that the thieves had sold the stolen items in Whiteblocks, immediately after leaving the shebeen.

Neighbor Kevin Pillay said that he heard the stolen items were sold in Whiteblocks.
Owner of the shebeen on Onyx Str, Bobby Pillay, known as uncle H, said that a lot of their liquor stock was stolen along with some other valuables.
