About 500 devotees mainly of the Shia grouping, gathered in Laudium this past Friday (June 26), to commemorate the day of Ashura, marking the martyrdom of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein ibn Ali, at the Battle of Karbala. Organised by the local Pakistani community, the procession commenced on Emerald Street and concluded on 19th Avenue, with participants walking in a solemn display of unity, faith and remembrance. The tragic events of Karbala symbolise the struggle for justice, truth and righteousness against oppression. Imam Hussein’s sacrifice is remembered as a powerful stand against injustice, inspiring generations to uphold moral values, courage and steadfastness in the face of adversity. During the procession, devotees, both young and old, engaged in prayers, recitations and mourning rituals, remembering the sacrifices made at Karbala. Ashura remains an important occasion for many Muslims, serving as a reminder of the values of compassion, sacrifice, unity and a continued commitment to truth and justice.

About 500 devotees took to the streets of Laudium last Friday (June 26) to observe the day of Ashura.
Ashura is a deeply significant day observed by Muslims around the world, falling on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is a day marked by reflection, remembrance, and spiritual devotion, carrying different meanings and traditions among various Muslim communities.
The procession which started at around 11:45 am and ended at around 2pm, was organised by the Pakistani community in Laudium. Around 500 Shia Muslims participated in the procession, which started from Emerald Street and concluded on 19th Avenue, near Laudium Secondary School in Laudium. The gathering reflected unity, discipline, and deep respect for the occasion, as participants came together to commemorate this important day.
