One of the most important religious practices observed by the Tamil community, is fasting during the month of Puratassi, which is expected to commence today (Friday Sept 17) and end on October 17. The month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Narayana, Venketeshwara, Perumalswami, Strinivasa and Balaji among many other names. Devotees consider this month as one of thanks to Lord Vishnu for preserving the universe. The fast is an abstinence of eating meat, smoking, consuming alcohol and restrictions of certain pleasures. In addition, prayers to compliment these sacrifices are required, such as reciting Mantras in praise of Lord Vishnu or singing songs in his praise. Many of the faithful have one meal a day, while others consume just fruit and nuts during this period. The fast should not be a torturous burden, but a sacrifice to pray faithfully. Saturdays are the most auspicious days, during this month.
*The Laudium Sun joins our readers in wishing all devotees observing Puratassi, well during this period.
