
There are some names in Laudium that don’t need a surname. Just say Aunty Maymoona and everyone smiles. They know exactly who you’re talking about. Born on December 31, 1935 (New Year’s Eve), Aunty Maymoona recently turned a remarkable 90 years old. Wife of the late Anver Keevee Cassim, Aunty Maymoona has 4 sons; Rafiq, Kader, Ahmed and Hoosen Anverali and 3 daughters; Khairoon, Rehana and Siddika. She is also the proud grandmother of 21 grandchildren and the proud great grandmother of 37 great grandchildren. This past Tuesday (Jan 20), the locally based Institute for Islamic Services (IIS) hosted a function at the Silver Crescent Gardens venue in Laudium, to honour the nonagenarian, with many of her friends from Laudium Care Services for the Aged (LCSA) also in attendance. Aunty Maymoona has become a household name in Laudium and even beyond… a symbol of warmth, kindness and service, especially during the blessed month of Ramadaan. For decades, she has become renowned for her nourishing, absolutely delicious haleem. Every Ramadaan, without fail many deghs of haleem are prepared, with Aunty Maymoona’s smile just as comforting as the haleem (nourishing broth) itself. The Laudium Sun wishes Aunty Maymoona many happy returns. “Turning 90 is no small feat and doing so with such grace and humility makes you one of Laudium’s true treasures. May the Almighty bless you with good health and happiness for many years to come. Your presence is a gift and your legacy is one steeped in selflessness and sincerity. IIS & LCSA dish out love as ‘Aunty Maymoona Haleem’ gracefu ly turns 90
Seniors from the community gathered this past Tuesday (Jan 20) at the Silver Crescent Gardens venue on Taj Street, Laudium, for a function hosted by the Institute for Islamic Studies (IIS), where a special guest was honoured for her remarkable life and service… Aunty Maymoona Cassim, who gracefully turned 90 on New Year’s Eve.
The guest of honour, Aunty Maymoona, was recognised for her kindness, generosity and unwavering commitment to the community.
Ahmed Arbee of Laudium Care Services for the Aged (LCSA) told the Laudium Sun, “Fondly known as ‘Aunty Maymoona Haleem’, she has been a pillar of strength in our community, cooking and selling haleem, a traditional broth, during the holy month of Ramadan and on other significant religious days. Her dedication to helping the less fortunate is truly inspiring. Aunty Maymoona has been an active member of society, spreading love, care and compassion to those in need. Her selfless acts have earned her the respect and admiration of her community.”
Halima Sulieman, also of the LCSA, told the Laudium Sun, “As she celebrates this milestone birthday, Aunty Maymoona’s story serves as a testament to the power of kindness, hard work, and community spirit. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come.”
