In recognition of India’s 77th Republic Day a celebration was held in Pretoria this past Monday (January 26) at India House. H. E. Shri Prabahat Kumar, High Commissioner of India in South Africa and Lesotho unfurled the National Flag of India.
The Republic Day celebration was attended by around 125 persons from the Indian diaspora, friends of India and local dignitaries who participated in the event with patriotic fervor and great enthusiasm. The day marked 77 years of the Constitution of India coming into force establishing India as a Sovereign, Democratic Republic.

The High Commissioner congratulated the Indian community on the occasion of the Republic Day. He acknowledged the contributions of the Indian Community in South Africa and expressed faith and expectations of the country, from Indians abroad for its participation to achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047.
Shri Kumar read out the message of the Hon’ble President of India, highlighting key achievements of the Government of India, including the opening of 57 crore bank accounts under the “Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana” the success of the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign, and the empowerment of tribal communities, including PVTG (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group) communities, through initiatives such as the “Dharti Aaba Janajatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan” and the “PM-JANMAN” Yojana.

The celebrations concluded with colourful cultural performances imbued with patriotic spirit. Performances at the event were dedicated to India’s heroes who fought for the nation’s freedom and progress. India’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity was vividly showcased through vibrant dance and drama presentations.
