Synopsis:
When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
Sun Review:
Following the launch of James Gunn’s new DC Universe with Superman, the spotlight now shifts to Kara Zor-El in Supergirl and while she may share the House of El crest, don’t expect the same hero. Milly Alcock delivers a star-making performance, effortlessly making the role her own. She captures Kara’s strength, vulnerability and rebellious spirit with confidence, creating a version of Supergirl that feels completely different from her famous cousin. It’s impossible to take your eyes off her whenever she’s on screen. Unlike Superman, whose optimism has always defined him, Kara is a hero shaped by loss, anger and loneliness. The film leans into her darker past, exploring the emotional scars that have made her tougher and more guarded. It’s an interesting contrast that gives the new DC Universe another unique voice instead of simply giving audiences “Superman in a different costume.” Visually, the film embraces its cosmic setting with colourful alien worlds, exciting action sequences and enough comic-book spectacle to satisfy superhero fans. While the story occasionally feels a little messy, particularly as it balances emotional drama with large-scale adventure, it never loses sight of Kara’s personal journey. That emotional core is what makes Supergirl work. It’s less about saving the world and more about discovering who you are after everything you’ve lost. Not every viewer will connect with Kara’s darker personality as easily as they did with Clark Kent’s hopeful outlook, but that’s exactly what makes her stand apart.
Sun Verdict:
Supergirl proves there’s room in the new DC Universe for more than one type of hero. Milly Alcock shines in a confident performance that introduces a more complicated and emotionally layered member of the Super family. It may not soar quite as high as Superman, but it’s still an entertaining superhero adventure that’s well worth taking flight with.
