Tenisha knows it’s all mind over the crown as she hopes to turn Miss UJ platform into a voice for mental health

The Miss University of Johannesburg (UJ) pageant is far more than a competition for a title.

Held annually, the event celebrates leadership, confidence and community engagement, while providing students with a platform to inspire change and advocate for causes that make a lasting impact.

Among this year’s Top 10 finalists is Tenisha Gounder (22), a Psychology Honours student at the University of Johannesburg, who is using the competition to shine a spotlight on mental health awareness and help break the stigma surrounding it.

Currently residing in Midrand, Tenisha previously lived in Centurion before pursuing her studies at UJ. Alongside her academic journey, she founded The Wise Minds Foundation, an initiative dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and encouraging more open conversations around emotional wellbeing. For Tenisha, the Miss UJ platform presents an opportunity to reach more people with a message she believes is both important and necessary.

“If you’re struggling with your mental health, seeking professional help is always the best option or reaching out to someone you trust as an alternative. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness,” Tenisha told the Lenasia Sun. As one of the competition’s Top 10 Finalists, Tenisha is hoping to continue expanding the reach of her advocacy while inspiring others to speak openly about mental health. Community members, family and friends can support Tenisha’s journey by casting their vote through https://acalytica.com/tenisha-g or by scanning the official QR code (see poster below). Every vote contributes towards helping Tenisha continue her mission of promoting mental health awareness while bringing her one step closer to becoming Miss University of Johannesburg 2026.
