The Smashing Machine: Releasing in cinemas – October 3

Synopsis:
The story of legendary mixed martial arts & UFC fighter Mark Kerr.

Sun Review:
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has built a career playing larger-than-life action heroes, but in The Smashing Machine, he finally puts down the explosions and picks up something far more explosive, a deeply human performance. Based on the real-life story of UFC legend Mark Kerr, this isn’t a typical sports biopic filled with training montages and underdog triumphs. It’s raw, bruised and often painful to watch – a portrait of a man fighting just as much with his demons as with his opponents. Johnson gives what might be the most grounded, emotionally charged performance of his career, shedding his usual charm and bravado for something rougher and more vulnerable. It’s a big leap forward for him as an actor and it works. Emily Blunt, as Kerr’s partner, brings fire and heartbreak to the film and their dynamic is one of the film’s emotional anchors. That said, the film’s power is often undercut by a messy script. The structure feels uneven and the story sometimes struggles to find a consistent tone, swinging between emotional depth and clichéd moments that feel a little too familiar. You’ll be invested, but you might also feel like it could have gone deeper or hit harder.

Sun Verdict:
The Smashing Machine is a gritty, emotional sports drama that lands most of its punches thanks to standout performances by Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The script’s a bit shaky, but this is still a solid, sometimes gut-wrenching film worth watching, especially if you want to see The Rock finally break the mould.
