Residents living in the Laudium area, remain concerned about the ongoing crime despite the local police and the CPF refusing to inform the public about the actual crime situation in the area, by not releasing weekly crime stats or even weekly crime trends in the area, so that the community can at least be aware or warned of the crime situation.
The Laudium CPF who are apparently partners (seemingly more in cahoots) with the local police, are supposed to be representing the community regarding their fears and concerns about crime in the area, but are clearly failing the community in this regard. This follows years of complaints by residents, especially those living in Ext 3, about poor police service in the area and the ongoing crime.
In one of the latest complaints received by the Laudium Sun for stats purposes, a family from Kathmandu Str, in Laudium Ext 3, complained about the lack of police patrols on their street. This, after their home was targeted by thieves, twice within a week, seemingly regarding it as an easy target, with both incidents occurring at night. Homeowner Ruby Macoba told the Laudium Sun that her home was targeted last Thursday (May 1) and a few days before, on Saturday (April 26), with the thieves stealing a variety of household items, including a freezer, school uniforms, blankets, and clothes that had been left hanging on the washing line.

one week, with thieves stealing many items from the yard.
Ruby continued, “I suspect both incidents were carried out by two male thieves who jumped over our wall to get into our yard. I believe the first incident of theft occurred after we got home in the early part of Saturday morning at around 2 am. We were attending a party and returned very late and went to bed shortly after arriving home. Not long after getting into bed, I heard some noises coming from the side of the back of the wall, but we were so tired that I did not go and check it out at the time. However, when I woke up in the morning and went into the yard, I was shocked to find that the clothes from the washing line, which included the kids’ school uniforms, blankets, and other garments had been stolen.”

Ruby added, “The worst part is that we had another break-in on Thursday (May 1), during which these greedy thieves managed to steal the freezer from the bar in the yard. I cannot understand how they got the freezer over the wall, perhaps they had other help. I think that the first time they stole in our yard, they saw the freezer but could not steal it as there were only two of them. So they came back a few days later and had help on the other side of the wall, to pass the freezer over. The crime in Laudium, especially in our area, is really bad and there must be more police patrollers to prevent this ongoing crime.”

Kathmandu Street resident, Jeram Vhana, told the Laudium Sun, “The break-ins, especially on our street, are terribly high. This is due to various factors, such as the lack of streetlights in our area, the absence of police patrols and the fact that, despite there being so many security companies operating in Laudium, when it’s time for real action, these guys are not prepared to make arrests and give evidence in court.”

Sohail Khan, also of Kathmandu Street, Laudium, told the Laudium Sun, “The crime situation in Laudium is really worrying. I believe that the crime is so high in our area because of the Itireleng squatter camp and I guess as long as there is a squatter camp nearby, we will continue to be victims of crime.”
