Congratulations are in order for Maymoona Chouglay of Erasmia, who achieved another milestone, recently graduating from Tukkies, with a Masters of Law, specializing in Disability Rights. Born in Kimberley in 1987, Maymoona started her education at Rynsoord Primary School. Owing to her poor eyesight, ‘Moona’, (as she is fondly known), together with her family, moved to Laudium in 1996, enrolling at Prinshof School for the Blind, where she completed grades 1,2 and 3 in 6 months. Maymoona learnt Arabic braille in 2003 at Madressatun Noor for the Blind. She completed her matric in 2005. While studying at the University of Pretoria, Maymoona lost her eyesight in 2008, but despite this she graduated as a Social Worker in 2013, at the University of Pretoria. Presently, she is employed by the Dept of Social Development. Maymoona told the Laudium Sun, “I chose my thesis on Disability Rights to create an awareness of people with any disability. My journey has not ended. With the help of the Almighty, my loving daughter Aaliya and duas from family and friends, I will walk my journey into a PhD career. Thank you also to Professor Abdul Qadir Chouglay, my parents and brothers for their support. Disability is not an inability. With or without it, make your dreams a reality.”
