A nation-wide field of 96 players participated in the 26th annual golf tournament, hosted by the Laudium Social Golf Club (LSGC) on the 22 of October 2023.
The ELS Club –Copperleaf, a challenging inland parklands links style course, was once again the venue for this years even
t. The objective of the LSGC is to promote golf and to raise funds for the local community. We are especially proud of the younger group of the LSGC members taking such a key role in hosting this year’s tournament from organising the players, food, prizes, trophies and caddies to the sponsorships. It was expressed that it is a fervent wish that the youth continue with this trend of helping the less fortunate in our community. Even to make a difference in one life is real success. Revenue is collected from a combination of golfers entrance fees, business sponsorships, and proceeds of an auction.
Conditions were hot and humid for golf with the course in a challenging condition. All golfers teed off at 7.10am in a short gun start. The competition was fierce and it needed a record breaking 69 gross score from local youngster Mikael Carrim, playing of a 1 handicap, to take the crown as this year’s champion golfer of the year. 2nd in the A division was Yusuf Ebrahim and third place was awarded to Ashraf Saddick.
The ‘B’ division (handicaps over 12), was won by Goolam Mohamed who showed the youngster’s how the game should be played. The runners up were Riyaad Dinath and Fayaad Dinath. Prizes were awarded for closest to the pin
on all of the four par 3 holes- Fayaad Dinath, Moosa Jassat, Tahir Ismail and Afzal Tayob were the victors in this category. The coveted prize for the longest drive was deservedly awarded to Mikael Carrim who muscled a massive drive of 286 metres down the eighteenth fairway.
The heart of the tournament belongs to the long list of sponsors. Their generosity makes it possible for the charities to meet some of their financial needs. It was heartwarming to see so many businesses and organizations give so openly; their contributions will certainly make a considerable difference to the lives of many of the less fortunate. Sponsor’s names were displayed on the course and are acknowledged in the Laudium Sun.

The Laudium Social Golf Club is a voluntary organisation and has approximately 40 members. It operates on a team basis and bears all the costs of the tournament. The charities that will benefit from this event are as follows: Sunrise School, Laudium Mental Handicap Society, Laudium Cancer Association, Care for the Aged, Pretoria Child Welfare, New Beginningz and CWF (Pretoria) Bursary Fund. A very special thanks for the overwhelming response received from all contributors, which enabled the club to once again to exceed last event’s collections. Charity Golf was the Overall Winner- we urge all sponsors and golfers to please join us in preparation for next year`s tournament, scheduled for mid September 2024.
