Learners from primary schools in the Laudium/Erasmia area once more competed against each other, in the annual ‘Gedigte en Toespraak’ competition.
The event which took place last Saturday (March 8) at Andrew Anthony Primary School saw talent at its best, as many learners showcased their talent in the language, which for most is a second or even third language. The learners from grades 3-7 certainly impressed officials from the district office of the Dept of Education, adjudicators, fellow learners and parents in one of the most exciting and talent-filled Afrikaans Poetry and Speech contests held.

Local teacher, Yasmin Moosa, a fundi of the Afrikaans language, who was one of the adjudicators, told the Laudium Sun, “All the adjudicators at the event, with the likes of D4’s intermediate facilitator Minnette Menz, Suraya Abdoola and I, were in total agreement and were elated and honoured to listen to the learners presenting interesting well-known poems and speeches, displaying word pronunciation and delivering with such admirable talent each item with exceptional confidence. This annual Afrikaans Poetry and Speech Contest would have made our famous Afrikaner poets the likes of Antjie Krogg and Pieter Snyders so proud of our blooming learners, who portrayed Afrikaans so beautifully. Each participant was awarded with a certificate and the winners with a medal. The adjudicators were also proud that the learners were excelling from a young age in Afrikaans, enjoying every moment of such a beautiful language in the classrooms at primary school level. Jacaranda Primary was voted the best school, winning most of the items at the contest. They were awarded with the ATKV Trophy 2025. The adjudicators would like to take this opportunity to express their best wishes to the learners and educators of Jacaranda Primary School. Well done!”
