SPHSS Holi celebration colours hundreds in joy

The Shree Pretoria Hindu Seva Samaj (SPHSS) hosted its annual Holi Festival at the Samaj grounds on 13th Ave, Laudium last night (Thursday, March 13).

The atmosphere was colourful and electrifying, with about 300 people, both young and old attending. Whilst observing Hindu religious rituals, it was certainly also an evening of fun, laughter and a time of bonding, with attendees colouring each other in powdered hues. Holi is celebrated by Hindus around the world on the day of Purnima (the full moon) in the month of Falgun over two consecutive days – the first day of Holi is known as Holika Dahan and the second as Dhuleti. It is also known as the “Festival of Colours.” Observed for centuries, the festival is a jubilant occasion that sees Hindus create bonfires and cover each other in rainbow-hued powder to commemorate the beginning of spring. Holi also celebrates fertility, colour, love and the triumph of good over evil. The origins of the festival can be found in various legends in Hindu mythology, one of which tells the story of a demon, Holika and her brother, king Hiranyakashipu. On the night before Holi, bonfires are lit to signify the burning of Holika and the victory of good over evil. Some Hindus who observe the festival will also smear themselves with ashes from the fire, as a symbol of purification. It is a really colourful occasion with all devotees, young and old, enjoying the evening with different coloured powders. Children also enjoy playing in the courtyard and covering each other with coloured powder.

Red represents sensuality and prosperity.

President of the Seva Samaj, Sanjay Govind, told the Laudium Sun, “Holi is the colour-rich festival sacrificing darkness for light, colour and joy! Holi is a vibrant Hindu Festival signifying the triumph of good over evil and the start of fresh and new beginnings. It is a time when we humbly sacrifice all our vices into the fire and surrender to the oneness of peace and faith. A few hundred people gathered at the Shree Pretoria Hindu Seva Samaj to share in this colour festival.”
