Diveshnee Moodley (27), a former resident of Sastri Avenue in Claudius (Laudium), has released her new book, ‘Journey Through Purtassi – Vol. 5,’ which she says connects children with their cultural roots.

Diveshnee told the Laudium Sun that she wanted young readers to understand more about the prayers and practices they encounter during the sacred month, which is associated with devotion to Lord Venkateswara.

“Children often take part in traditions before they fully understand what it means. I wanted to create something they could enjoy while learning the reasons behind what they see and do. The book combines explanations with illustrations, colouring pages, puzzles and activities.”

Diveshnee added, “The varied approach gives children several ways to engage with the subject and encourages them to continue learning with their families. A picture or an activity can start a conversation. If a child asks a question about Purtassi after working through the book, that is exactly the kind of response I hope for,” she said.

Diveshnee’s other books explore Thaipoosam, Navaratri, the Ramayan and Maha Shivaratri. She develops them as a community initiative alongside her graphic design and branding business, Shakthi Graphics, which she founded while still in high school.

The printed Purtassi books are distributed free of charge through temples and community institutions. Diveshnee thanked her parents, Terry and Vasanthi Moodley, as well as the families and communities who continue to support the book initiative.
