This past Wednesday (Sept 24), many residents of Laudium, Erasmia and surrounds enjoyed their day off, as they joined the rest of the country in celebrating Heritage Day, a time to honour the many unique cultures and traditions present in our Rainbow Nation, a powerful reminder that unity can be found in diversity. Many families commemorated the day (also known as Braai Day) by heating the coals, with the familiar smell of braais filling the streets. Others chose to celebrate by dressing in their colourful traditional attire and attending school and community events, such as the Heritage Day celebrations at Hillside and Laudium Primary Schools on Tuesday (Sept 23), where learners and staff proudly showcased their cultural outfits, turning the schoolyards into a vibrant sea of colour.
The Laudium Sun joins Hillside Primary learners; Salman Ahmed, Luzimfefe Mbane, Aqlah Allie, Dishantha Naidoo & Kiarah Mahomed in wishing all our readers greetings, in the spirit of Heritage Day. May the pride and unity shown this past week, remain alive throughout the year and may the beauty of our cultural differences remind us that despite our varied cultural backgrounds, we are united as South Africans.
Hillside Primary hails rainbow cultures in colourful Heritage Day celebration…
Heritage Day at Hillside Primary School was nothing short of spectacular! This past Tuesday (Sept-23), the halls were bursting with colour and rhythm as learners and teachers came together to celebrate the rainbow of cultures that make South Africa so special.
From the moment learners arrived, the atmosphere was vibrant. Many came dressed in traditional attire representing their cultural backgrounds, from isiZulu beadwork and isiXhosa prints to Indian styled outfits and Tsonga headscarves. The diversity in clothing alone told a powerful story of unity in diversity.
The highlight of the morning was our assembly, where learners entertained us with traditional dances, soulful songs, and lively poems. Every performance was a reminder that our differences don’t divide us – the beauty of our cultural differences reminded us that, despite our varied backgrounds, we are united as South Africans.
The celebration was not only fun but educational. It gave learners the chance to reflect on where they come from, to learn more about others, and to realise the importance of respecting and preserving heritage. By celebrating together, the school showed that our strength lies in our diversity and that every culture contributes to the beautiful tapestry of South African identity.
As the day ended, the message was clear: Heritage Day is not just about food, clothing, and traditions, but about unity, respect, and pride in being part of one nation. The event left learners and teachers alike feeling inspired and reminded of the importance of celebrating who we are. Heritage Day is a special occasion that reminds us of the importance of embracing and respecting the diverse cultures, traditions, and languages that make up our nation. At our school, Hillside Primary, this year’s celebration of Heritage Day was filled with colour, excitement, and pride. -Submitted
