The Islamic New Year (1448 AH) commenced yesterday (Wednesday, June 17) in South Africa and many parts of the world, heralding the arrival of Muharram. Muharram, which means ‘sanctified’ is one of the four sacred months referred to in the holy Quraan and is the month with which Muslims begin their lunar calendar, each month consisting of either 29 or 30 days, making the Islamic year approximately 10 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. The first 10 days of Muharram hold profound significance in Islamic history, as it was during this period that the Battle of Karbala took place, a defining moment that continues to resonate in the hearts of Muslims across the world. On the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, Imaam Hussain (AS), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), was martyred, making the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of truth, justice and righteousness. Alongside Imaam Hussain (AS), were members of his family including his infant son, Ali Ashar and a group of devoted companions, who were deprived of water for days, by the enemy, before being martyed. The Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) said, “The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadaan, are those observed in Muharram.”
