Hello there dear Kids Corner readers and welcome to this July edition of your favorite column. July is a very special month, as it is the birthday month of our beloved Nelson Mandela, who was born on July 18, 1918. On this day every year, many across our country and indeed in other parts of the world, honor his memory, by devoting 67 minutes of their time to help others. Why 67 minutes? Because Madiba spent 67 years of his life fighting for freedom, fairness and peace. So, dear kids even if you are young, spread kindness every day, not just on Mandela Day. You could say something nice to a classmate who looks a little sad, share your lunch with a friend who forgot theirs or help mum pack the shopping bags. Remember, what Madiba once said, “It is in your hands to make the world a better place.” Until next time… Happy Mandela Month!

Did you know?

Nelson Mandela was born in the village of Mvezo in Transkei, South Africa.
Madiba qualified as a lawyer in 1942, aged 24
In 1963, Mandela was arrested by the then “apartheid” police and spent the next 27 years behind bars.
In 1990, the then President of South Africa, F.W. de Klerk, set Nelson Mandela free.
In 1994, Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black President.
Madiba worked hard to make South Africa a country of equality where people of all races could live together in peace.
In 1999, Nelson Mandela retired as President and his successor was Thabo Mbeki.
In 2009, Mandela’s birthday, July 18, was officially named “Nelson Mandela Day”
Madiba sadly passed away in December 2013, aged 95.
