Laudium running fast in Parkrun…with many reaching milestone 250th 5km run…

Parkrun – Laudium, is certainly running fast with excitement as more and more participants from Laudium and surrounding areas, take part in the 5km run, walk or even jogging event each Saturday morning at the Laudium Sports Stadium.

However, recently there was much more excitement and even jubilation when a number of local ‘casual’ athletes celebrated their milestone 250th run at the stadium. The Laudium sector of ‘Parkrun’, sees hundreds of participants gathering each Saturday morning at the stadium at 8am. There are currently over 225 Parkrun events that take place on weekends throughout the country, with thousands participating in the ‘fun run’ each week.

Haneef Tayob, from the Laudium Parkrun, told the Laudium Sun, “Parkrun is more than just a 5km walk or run, it’s a celebration of personal achievement and shared experiences. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, walking at a relaxed pace, or simply showing up to enjoy the fresh air, parkrun is a space where every step counts. It’s free, welcoming to all, and encourages participation over competition. At Laudium Parkrun, the people who show up every week make it special. Some have been attending for years, steadily reaching impressive milestones that reflect their dedication. The journey of Abdul Gani, now 88 years old, is nothing short of inspiring. Since his first event, he has completed an astonishing 248 parkruns, making him a familiar face at the starting line. His consistency proves that age doesn’t have to be a barrier to staying active. Then there’s Jackeyson Ramjee Heera, 77, who reached an impressive 250 parkruns. It’s not just about the number of runs, it’s about the friendships built along the way and the satisfaction of showing up each week. Joining them is Shafee Dockrat, 62, with 251 parkruns to his name. All three started their journey around 2016, and nearly a decade later, they are still committed to taking part every Saturday morning.”

Haneef added, “For everyone at Laudium Parkrun, milestones are not just about distance covered, they represent determination and proof that staying active is worth making time for. After completing their run or walk, participants take a moment to unwind, enjoying well-earned refreshments while reflecting on the morning’s achievements and sharing their thoughts. If running isn’t your thing, walking still delivers incredible benefits. Whether you walk at parkrun or in your own time, here’s what happens when you move:
– After 2 minutes: Blood starts flowing, waking up muscles and boosting brain activity.
– After 10 minutes: Stiffness eases, joints loosen, and mood improves.
– After 30 minutes: Endorphins kick in, bringing joy and reducing stress.
– After 60 minutes: Metabolism stays active, supporting weight management and overall heart health.
Laudium Parkrun is free, welcoming, and open to all. If you’ve ever thought about joining but hesitated, consider this your invitation. You don’t need to be fast, you just need a willingness to show up and take that first step.

Register today at www.parkrun.co.za, bring a friend, and experience the joy of movement. Your milestone moment might be closer than you think.”
