Raksha Bandhan, a special Hindu festival celebrating the loving bond between brothers and sisters, is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu calendar month of Shravan. The name Raksha Bandhan comes from Sanskrit and means the “tie or knot of protection,” with ‘Raksha’ meaning protection and ‘Bandhan’ referring to the act of tying. On this special day, sisters traditionally tie a sacred thread, known as a Rakhi, around the right wrist of their brothers, while praying for their prosperity, long life and well-being.
Brothers, in return, give their sisters a gift and promise to guide and protect them, through any difficulties in life. The festival brings families together and strengthens the bond of love and affection between siblings.
