The blessed month of Ramadaan is expected to commence in South Africa on Wednesday evening (February 18), subject to the sighting of the new moon. This sacred month of fasting, prayer and reflection is the month in which the first verses of the Holy Qur’aan were revealed and will be observed throughout the world by about 2 billion Muslims. For devotees, Ramadaan is not only about abstaining from food and liquid between sunrise and sunset. It is also a time of spiritual renewal, increased prayer, charity, forgiveness and strengthening family bonds. The Laudium Sun joins the above pictured PMT College learners in wishing all Muslims a spiritually uplifting Ramadaan. “May this sacred month be a time of peace and unity. May our fasts be accepted, our pious prayers answered and may the Almighty ease the suffering of all oppressed people throughout the world.
Ramadaan Kareem!”

Ramadaan… be mindful before sending WhatsApp messages during late nights and at Fajr time
Dear editor,
Kindly publish this letter, which I feel is important for your Muslim readers to take note of, as we approach the sacred month of Ramadaan. It is unfortunate that while Muslims go full out to pray, to fast and to do good deeds, they somehow or the other neglect to respect the peace and sanctity of others. It is disturbing when, especially in Ramadaan, our phones are beeping at night during Taraweeh time and even in the early mornings during Sehri and Fajr time, with Jummah Mubarak messages to what to pray during Ramandaan, from fellow Muslims. Whilst the messages are appreciated, they are certainly annoying and disturbing as many of us are in the Mosque praying our Taraweeh at night or praying Fajr in the early morning and are then bombarded with a whole lot of beeps on the various WhatsApp groups and even on our personal numbers from family members and friends. I wish to remind these culprits, as I would call them, that disturbing one during their prayers or even during their sleep is totally un-Islamic. It is considered disrespectful and disliked in Islam as it infringes upon the rights of individuals to sleep and worship peacefully. I therefore, through this letter, appeal to all Muslim brothers and sisters, to not send messages at Fajr time and during the nighttime prayers. If you must send, why not send during the day? PS: The only reason I don’t put my phone on silent is in case urgent help is needed on one of the groups or to see funeral notices.
New Crescent Moon – Ramadaan 1447
According to the Planetarium, the Astronomical New Moon (conjunction – birth) is on February 17, 2026 (Tuesday) at 12:01 UTC (2:01pm in South Africa).
Thus, on Tuesday evening, February 17 (Shabaan 29), it will be highly unlikely to see the moon with the naked eye, as it will only be about 5 hours old. In South Africa the new moon will be about 29 hours at sunset in Johannesburg on Wednesday night, February 18 (Shabaan 30). It is thus most likely for the moon to be seen in South Africa during sunset on Wednesday night, if weather conditions are perfect.
*Islamic months are either 29 or 30 days.
