Sgt Chokoe teams with youth team in awareness campaign

The South African Police Service- Laudium: Social Crime Prevention- Victim Empowerment Centre NPO and the Laudium Youth Crime Prevention Desk, held a Safer Community visibility foot patrol awareness campaign, this past Monday (July 7).

The campaign was held to make the public aware of cyber crime, fraud, the theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles around the sector 3 area in Laudium.

The teams involved met at the Itireleng Informal Settlement and then proceeded to Jewel Street, 2nd Avenue and the Laudium Shopping Center area in sector 3, engaging with the community on safety measures to prevent crime.

Tips on how to prevent business robbery, house robbery and car hijacking were also shared, as follows:

Tips on how to prevent theft from motor vehicle and theft out of motor vehicle.

  • Not to leave valuable items exposed in the vehicle.
  • To ensure that vehicle is locked before leaving the parking area.
  • Not to leave vehicles outside one’s property or parked along the streets in the evening.

The community was also made aware of cyber crimes and fraud, as follows:

  • Not to buy online from or transfer money to companies or persons they don’t know.
  • Always verify the account before making any transactions.

The community was further encouraged to break the silence on drugs by reporting any sort of abuse to the Police. More than fourteen(14) Youth Crime Prevention Desk members were in attendance.

Sgt Simon Chokoe, head of the project at the Laudium Police Station told the Laudium Sun ,”Together with local stakeholders, we will continue with visibility foot patrols, stop and searches to ensure that the community is and feels safe. We need to protect the future of this community, including the youth.”
