Shock & sorrow as community loses two beloved sons…

The recent tragic passing of Hafez Mohamed Razaak Moosa (40) and Dr Zaeem Ismail Ebrahim (46) within a few days of each other, has left families devastated and the broader community in shock and disbelief, with tributes continuing to pour in locally and indeed beyond (See Laudium Sun Facebook page). Brought up in Laudium, the pair have been described by many, as pillars of kindness and humility. Their devotion to family, friends & the community at large was evident by the huge number of mourners in attendance at their funerals. Those close to Hafez Mohamed, more fondly known as ‘Ahmedy,’ remember him as a polite, gentle soul, who always carried a smile and was devoted to his wife, children and widowed mother. “Family and bringing joy to others, meant everything to him,” said a close friend. Dr Zaeem, equally admired, was known not only for his medical expertise in the field of radiology, but for his compassion. “He had a heart of gold and if a patient didn’t have the financial means, he would simply waive the fee,” said Dr Hamzah Bava. The Laudium Sun extends deepest and most sincere condolences to the families of Hafez Mohamed and Dr Zaeem. “Both Ahmedy and Zaeem were shining examples of what it means to live with compassion, dignity and care for others. Their passing is not only a loss to their families, but to the entire community. May the Almighty grant them the highest stage in Jannah and make their qabrs a place of light and peace. May the Almighty grant their dear ones strength and patience during this extremely difficult time.”

Obituary: Hafez Mohamed Razaak Moosa (40)
“My father was perfect to us…” – daughter (15)

Hafez Mohamed Razaak Moosa (40)
Born: May 24, 1985
Passed on: April 21, 2026

“Sometimes in life the words of the soul cannot be written on paper with ink. Sometimes words so heavy cannot be projected. And this is one of those moments. We are not only remembering a man, we are honouring a light. A presence so full of noor, so steady and so certain, that even now, it has not dimmed, it only is getting brighter settling into the hearts of everyone he touched. My father was many things to many people. A devoted husband, whose love was constant and unwavering, a steady rock. A father who did not just raise his children, but shaped them with patience and with wisdom and with a quiet strength that never once asked to be seen. A son who honoured his parents and made them so so proud. A brother who showed up and kept true to his word. A friend, a cousin, a nephew, an uncle…whose words never the wrong words, always seemed to arrive exactly when they were needed most. But beyond all of these roles, he was a rare kind of man. The kind whose presence alone could steady a room. The kind who carried so much, yet made it look effortless. The kind who just made you feel safe. They say, “The best among you are those who are best to their families.”
And if that is the measure of a man, then my father was among the very best. There are seasons in life that test you quietly and harshly. Moments where time slows, where everything becomes uncertain, where the weight of it all feels too much to carry. And yet, through all of that, he never wavered. He showed up. Every day, in ways both big and small.
Sometimes it was in words.
Sometimes it was in silence.
But it was always in presence.
But always there.
He had a way of making you feel safe without ever saying the word. A way of guiding you without making you feel lost. A way of loving you so fully, that even now, that love still feels like something you can reach out and hold. His heartbeat was the only sense I needed to hear when I couldn’t bear the weight of the world.
They say, “What is meant for you will never miss you, and what misses you was never meant for you.”
We believe that everything has a time and a place. We believe that everything happens for a reason. But some losses… some losses just don’t make sense and they leave us questioning everything we stand for. What we do know is this:
This isn’t goodbye, because a man like my father does not simply leave. He leaves behind his values. His patience. His quiet, unwavering strength. The way he chose kindness, even when life demanded more from him than it should have. He leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in years, but in lives changed.
There is a saying that a father leaves his children not just a name, but a path. My father left us..left me..more than that. He left us something to live up to. Something to carry forward. Something to become.
“Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” Not instead of hardship. Not after it. With it. And surely me writing this only proves that.
And perhaps that is where the reason lives. Not in why we lost him, but in what he built within us before he left.
In the strength he placed so quietly into our hands. In the way he taught us to stand, even when everything inside us feels like falling. He left me, as I like to say, a hundred shoes. And I promise I will spend my life trying to fill them, not by becoming him, but by honouring everything he was. My father was perfect to us and we all know how rare that is.
We stand here with broken hearts, yes..but also with full ones. Because we were loved by him. And to be loved by him… was to be given something irreplaceable. He lives on in all of us. His voice echos in my head, his voice and his advice carrying me through these last few days especially. And if everything truly happens for a reason, then perhaps the reason is this:
That a love like his was never meant to stay in one lifetime. For his love could not be contained in one lifetime. It was meant to be carried forward…through us, for him.”

On behalf of my mother Nazreen, myself (Fatima Zahraa), Zayna, Mikayla & Abdul Mateen and on behalf of every person who had the privilege of knowing him, we stand here not just in grief, but in deep, unconditional gratitude.

“There are people who pass through life and then there are those who leave a mark so steady and so deep that their absence is felt in ways words cannot fully reach. Hafez Mohamed was one of those people.
When I was asked to write about him, I was reminded of a question from a book by Stephen Covey which I read many years ago, if one were to pass away in a few years’ time, what would their eulogy say? It is meant to shape how we live. In his case, it simply reflects how he already did.
To those who did not know him well, what is written here may seem almost too complete. But those who knew him understand, this was simply who he was. He lived with an unshakable moral compass, grounded, steady, and untouched by the noise of the world. There was a clarity about him, a way of seeing things as they were, without excess or confusion. In his presence, there was ease. He lived with quiet discipline. Early rising, consistency, punctuality, and a deep sense of responsibility defined him. His word was not given lightly, and once given, it was unbreakable. It was his honour. At his core was a profound tawakkul in the Almighty, something he lived. He carried a certainty that Allah was with him and his family, and that certainty gave him a calm strength that anchored everything he did.
He loved Rasulullah (SAW) and the awliya, and sought to emulate them in character and conduct. From a young age, even in his teenage years, his moral compass was already firm, shaped by a beautiful example that he honoured throughout his life. He was a devoted family man, present, balanced, generous and measured in all things. He was never excessive, never harsh, never overtaken by anger. Instead, he carried a quiet strength that
brought ease to those around him. His kindness was constant. He always had a good word, a steady presence and a way of making people feel at ease. And alongside it all was his humour, sharp, natural, and perfectly timed, lifting those around him without effort. He was part of a brotherhood, a circle of friendship built over decades. Each of us knew him differently, but all of us shared the privilege of knowing someone so sincere, so steady, and so rare. He never needed to prove himself. For me, he was a friend of 35 years, a constant
through every season of life. There are moments we shared over decades that I will always carry with me. He really got me. And in all those years, he never let me down, not once. And perhaps that is what makes this loss so deeply felt, because it is not only the loss of a friend, but the loss of a part of your own life that existed alongside him.
What he leaves behind is not only memory, but a standard, a way of living with integrity, faith, balance and quiet excellence. May the Almighty grant him the highest stages of Jannah, fill his grave with light, reunite him with those he loves, and make his life a source of ongoing reward, Ameen.”

In Loving Memory of Hafez Mohamed Razaak Moosa (Ahmedie)
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we, the friends, the trustees and the musallees of Sayadinah Ali Institute, mourn the passing of our beloved friend and brother, Mohamed Razaak Moosa, affectionately known as Ahmedie, who returned to his Creator at the early age of 40. Ahmedie was a truly gentle soul, a man whose life was a reflection of devotion — devoted to his Deen, to his beloved family, and to the many friends who were blessed to know him. His kindness, humility, and calm nature touched the hearts of all who crossed his path. He carried himself with humility, sincerity, and a quiet dignity that left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Even in the face of recent difficulties, his character never waivered. He remained patient, kind, and steadfast, continuing to embody the same warmth and goodness that defined his life. He had a remarkable gift of bringing joy to others through his uncanny ability to imitate those he met. With sharp observation and natural humour, he would light up any gathering—never to mock, but to connect, to uplift, and to bring smiles to those around him. It was a reflection of his deep love for people and his ability to make everyone feel at ease. Ahmedie was also blessed with exceptional sporting ability. Whether on the court or among friends, he brought both skill and spirit to every game.
Our competitive yet deeply social paddle matches will never be the same without him—the laughter, the banter, and the moments of friendly rivalry now etched into our memories. For many of us, Ahmedie was part of the rhythm of our daily and weekly lives. Our mornings at the Masjid, followed by coffee together, were moments of brotherhood we cherished deeply. And our Sunday breakfasts—filled with conversation, laughter, and companionship—will never feel quite the same again without his presence. The sheer number of people who gathered for his janaza was a true testament to the beautiful character he carried throughout his life. He touched so many hearts in ways words can hardly capture. May his memorisation of the Holy Qur’an be a guiding light for him, a means of elevation, and a source of intercession for him. May it be his noor and his ticket to Jannah. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He reminded us of the beauty of sincerity, the strength of patience, and the true meaning of friendship. We make du’a that the Almighty grants him Jannatul Firdaus, forgives his shortcomings, and grants sabr and strength to his beloved family and all who mourn his loss. Indeed, to the Almighty we belong and to Him we shall return.

Obituary: Dr Zaeem Ebrahim (46)
“My daddy was my Superman” – daughter (11)

Dr Zaeem Ebrahim (46)
Born: September 3, 1979
Passed on: April 26, 2026

“Beauty is the garden scent of roses, Murmuring water flowing gently… Can words describe the indescribable? — Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi —

He lived a life that never asked for recognition, yet left an imprint that will not fade. Those who knew him understood this quietly, as he gave more than he ever took.
In his community, he was a constant presence who was steady, dependable, and deeply kind. Whether it was a neighbour in need, a colleague under pressure, or a stranger seeking guidance, he always showed up, not for praise, but because it was simply who he was. His generosity was not measured in grand gestures, but in the everyday moments where he chose others over himself.
At home, he was everything a family could dream of. As a devoted husband, he built his marriage on love, respect, and unwavering partnership. As a father, he was present in the ways that matter most, always listening, guiding, laughing, and standing as a source of strength. As a loyal, doting son, nothing was ever too much for him. He cared for his parents with a deep sense of responsibility, always making sure that they were supported and never alone. Professionally, he carried the same spirit into his work as a radiologist. His career was not just a job; it was a calling. Behind every scan, every diagnosis, was a patient whose life mattered to him. He approached medicine with humility and precision. He worked not for recognition, but for the quiet knowledge that he was making a difference.
His life was measured in the lives he touched, the love he gave, and the example he set. He showed that greatness is not found in loud achievements, but in consistent compassion, in showing up, and in living with purpose. Zaeem was a man, not built for this world, but for the aakhirah. Every moment was spent consciously in the path of the Almighty. His legacy lives on in all of us; through the way he loved, the way he served, and the way he carried himself. He has shown us how to live with purpose and sincerity. May the Almighty grant him the highest place in Jannah, Ameen.”
– Mehnaaz’s (wife) siblings

To my cousin, my brother in all but name – We grew up side by side, studied late, shared every aim. A brilliant radiologist with eyes that saw beyond the screen, You read people’s pain with the same care, gentle and keen. The most devoted father, husband, son and
brother too. A cousin and friend whose loyalty always rang true.
You gave more than asked, went the extra mile without pride, Keeping family woven close with love as your guide. Your advice was always steady and comforting and you were always there providing a hand in need. A genuine, loving soul – we’ll miss you in every way and every part of our lives.
– Dr Jameel Moosa (Cousin)

We’re still trying to process losing our dear brother Zaeem. He was a gem of a person and one of our closest friends. At 46, it still doesn’t feel real that he’s gone. He was part of our everyday lives in a very simple, natural way, grabbing coffee, catching up after work, checking in on each other and just being there for all the moments friends share.
Some of our best memories are from trips and holidays together, the travelling, the late plans that somehow came together, the shared meals, and the laughs along the way. Those times meant a lot to all of us, and he made them what they were just by being part of them.
With Zaeem, things were never complicated. If you called him, he picked up. If you needed him, he showed up. If plans were made, he made every effort to be there. That was just who he was. We keep thinking about the small things, the coffees that turned into long catch-ups, the messages that always got a reply, the trips we took together, and the feeling that there would always be more time to plan the next one. It all feels very different now.
We also knew how dedicated and committed he was to his work as a radiologist, and how much care he put into it. But with us, he was simply Zaeem our friend, part of our group,
part of our lives. He leaves behind his parents, Ismail and Najma; his wife, Mehnaaz; his children, Sahal, Nabeel, and Maryam and his brother, Humza. They are all in our thoughts and prayers. What we’re left with now are the moments and memories we shared together.
But he stays with us in everything we shared, and in the friendship that doesn’t end here.
May the Almighty grant him the highest place in Jannah and give strength and patience to his family and all who loved him. Till we meet again brother…
– Hajee, Adil, Shiraaz & other friends

Forty-six years. Two decades of healing. Countless lives touched. Zaeem poured himself into his family, his patients, and his friendships. He read widely, thought deeply, and loved quietly but fiercely. Even in his own struggles, he showed up for others. And especially for the powerless—he showed up first. While many simply walk past the poor, Zaeem stopped. Whether it was waiving fees, arranging free scans, using his connections to fast-track care for the destitute, or quietly paying for a stranger’s treatment—he understood that saving one
life is like saving all of humanity… Miss you my friend..
– Dr Hamzah Bava

Dr. Zaeem Ebrahim – Gone, but never absent…
There are men who walk this earth and etch themselves into hearts. Dr. Zaeem was such a man. Kindness was his language. Humility was his garment. Strength was his silent companion. The world knew him as a respected doctor. We knew him as our big brother — the one whose smile steadied us, whose hands lifted us when we faltered.
A brilliant student, a dutiful son, a loving husband, a devoted father. When darkness surrounded me and my mother, he was the light. He gave, he helped and he never asked for gratitude. Though unseen now, he is never absent. His legacy calls us to compassion, to humility, to gentle strength. Oh Almighty, illuminate his qabr and unite him with Rasulallah. Ameen.
– Mukhtar Yoonas Cassim (Cousin)

Zaeem’s life was defined by compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to others. Many knew him not just for his expertise, but for his kindness, his patience, and the way he made each person feel seen and heard. Beyond his profession, he was the heart of our family. He had a quiet strength, a generous spirit, and a sense of humor that could lift even the heaviest of days. He showed up for people – not only when it was convenient, but especially when it mattered most. That was simply who he was.
To me, he was not just my brother but my source of strength & support throughout my life. As we mourn him today, we are flooded with so many memories. From our childhood adventures to family holidays, Zaeem was my best friend. My life will never be the same again.
As we mourn this devastating loss, we also celebrate a life lived with purpose and integrity. We are grateful for the time we had with him. He will be deeply missed, forever loved and never forgotten.
– Prof Shabnam Abdoola

Messages from Dr Zaeem’s children:
My daddy was my Superman. He was my tutor, my personal driver, my chef, my 24/7 doctor, but most of all he was my best friend. Every time he studied with me I got the best marks. He always believed in me. He helped me with everything, no matter what. Any question I had, I knew he had the answer. I woke up everyday just to see his smile, hear him laugh, and feel his love. I am going to miss him very much, but I know he is smiling at me from Jannah. May we all reunite in the aakhira as a family, Ameen.
– Daughter – Maryam (11)

Daddy, through his love and guidance, gave us a clear image of who we want to be. He was our greatest role model, molding us through his actions into the kind of people who we are today. He left us with a world of wisdom and knowledge that will continue to guide us. Everything he taught us throughout the beautiful life with us will always stay with us. The best gift a father can give his children is akhlaaq, and one day we will achieve the level of manners that he would have wanted us to have, Ameen.
– Sons: Sahal (17) and Nabeel (15)
