Urdu Poetry night leaves audience rightly well-versed

The Raslouw Orchid was abuzz recently as over 200 guests attended South Africa’s first ever Urdu poetry night, hosted under the banner of “Fannan Season 3.” The event united poets, literary enthusiasts and community leaders in a powerful celebration of Urdu language and heritage. A historic highlight came from Egyptian poet Prof. Wala Jamal the first Arab woman to recite poetry in Urdu whose performance drew admiration from the crowd. The evening also featured renowned poets Dr. Barki, Ali Anjum, Raja Nadeem, Iqbal Qureshi, Sajjad Khan and Majazi, each delivering verses that touched on love, identity and culture. The programme was smoothly hosted by Zahid Afzal, President of the Overseas Pakistani Global Foundation, whose passion for Urdu culture shone throughout. Special guests included local dignitaries, the Society of Urdu Adab Benon and representatives from the Pakistan High Commission.

Urdu poetry night writes a new chapter in SA history

South Africa’s first-ever Urdu poetry night hosted under the banner of “Fannân Season 3,” was held at the Raslouw Orchid, the previous Saturday evening.

With over 200 attendees, the event was a proud celebration of Urdu language and literature, uniting poets, enthusiasts and community leaders, at a night of powerful expression and rich heritage.

The highlight of the evening was the presence of Prof. Wala Jamal, a renowned Urdu poet from Egypt, who holds the distinction of being the first Arab woman to recite poetry in Urdu.

Her performance captivated the audience and marked a unique milestone in the literary history of the region.

The event also showcased a stellar line-up of celebrated poets, including Dr. Barki, Ali Anjum, Raja Nadeem, Iqbal Qureshi, Sajjad Khan, and Majazi, each delivering verses that resonated deeply with the audience, reflecting themes of identity, love, and culture.

The master of ceremonies for the night was Zahid Afzal, President of the Overseas Pakistani Global Foundation, whose eloquence and warmth brought the entire evening together. His deep passion for promoting Urdu culture was evident throughout the programme, earning himapplause from attendees and guests alike.

A number of distinguished community leaders and dignitaries were present as special guests, including Saif Ghumman, Mian Naseer, Raja Falhar Hayat, Amant Ali Tarar, Iran Tudi, Zahid Chohan, Naeem Nawab, Falak Share Ashraf, Mian Azhar, Wicky Cheema, Adeel Anwer, Sajjad Ghumman and Mubashar Ali. Their attendance underscored the growing appreciation and support for cultural initiatives within the South African diaspora.

Also in attendance was the Society of Urdu Adab Benoni, further adding to the event’s literary gravitas. Jalal Zaidi from Pakistan High Commission was also present. Behind the success of this unforgettable night stood the dedicated leadership of Faraz Media, represented by Sarfraz Mukadam, Saleem Shakoor, Saif Ghumman, and Zahid Afzal. Their tireless efforts and vision have not only enriched the local cultural scene but have set a precedent for future events.

As the evening drew to a close, guests in attendance expressed deep appreciation and urged the organisers to continue hosting such events, calling it a necessary step toward preserving the Urdu language and promoting cultural heritage in South Africa. Indeed, this poetry night was more than an event—it was a movement and one that promises a vibrant future for Urdu literature on African soil.
