White Cane Rally in Laudium illuminates lives of the visually impaired

An inspiring and heartwarming event, organized to raise awareness about the rights, independence and abilities of visually impaired and blind individuals kicked off at the Laudium Library last Wednesday morning.

The aim of the event, known as the ‘White Cane Rally’ was to support and celebrate visually impaired individuals, attracting people from all over the Province, creating a sense of unity and hope. Event organizer, Vonani Baloyi (36) from the Department of Sport, Art and Cultural Recreation, explained to the Laudium Sun the importance of the rally. “This is about showing the strength and independence of blind people. The white cane is a symbol of their courage”. Vonani was instrumental in ensuring that the event ran smoothly and that the venue was accessible for all those in attendance especially the visually impaired. Kamogelo Maree (27) a visually impaired actress from Kagiso Krugersdorp, who now lives in Pretoria, in order to complete her studies, attended her first White Cane Rally and was most excited.

Vonani Baloyi (36) from Department of Sport, Art and Cultural Recreation, said the white cane is a symbol of courage.

Known for her role on Scandal(Etv) as Tirelo, Kamogelo was thrilled to be part of the event. ”I’m so excited to be here. It’s inspiring to see how this rally brings people together”, she said with a big smile.

Visually impaired actress, Kamogelo Maree, was delighted to be part of the event.

Lan Naidoo who is also visually impaired, was invited by the MEC of Sports, Arts, and Culture to attend the event focused on disability awareness, specifically highlighting visual impairments and blindness. At the event, the books of 10 visually impaired authors including that of Lan Naidoo (57), with his book titled ‘Healed by Grace’ were exhibited at the event.Lan was also invited to sing a few songs during the event. Lan told the Laudium Sun , “There is also a potential opportunity to publish the books in both audio and Braille formats. The event also prioritized safety, thanks to Mpho Nathaba (25), from Mamelodi. Mpho is part of the Siyabangena Patrollers, a team that came to ensure the safety of all visually impaired participants.” We’re here to help and make sure everyone feels safe and cared for,” Mpho explained. A key moment of the day was led by Bongile Matjila, the Project Manager from the South African Library for visually impaired individuals who can now read and write using tools like Braille and modern technologies. “We have amazing resources available to help visually impaired people live full, independent lives,” Bongile said, while showing some of the tools used by the visually impaired. Additionally, the South African Library for the Blind generously presented Lan with a “smart cane” to assist with easier navigation. The White Cane Rally was more than just an event, it was a celebration of strength and community, underscoring the importance of inclusivity Starting with inspirational talks, it left everyone feeling hopeful and inspired with the message of hope, strength and unity shining brightly, lighting the way for a more inclusive future.
